The Holiday Between Halloween and Thanksgiving
Somewhere between Halloween and Thanksgiving lies another holiday - Veterans Day. This day honors those who have served our country, yet it can feel edged out by all the hype of the neighboring holidays. It got us wondering if there’s a way to use some of the Halloween and Thanksgiving momentum towards supporting our military? Halloween’s claim to fame is candy. Thanksgiving is all about gratitude. And, according to several organizations who support our military, these heroes appreciate both those things! Turns out there’s a way to use Halloween as a springboard for recognizing women and men in uniform this November.
“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt.” ― Charles M. Schulz
If you find yourself with excess candy this Halloween, you can donate it to people who serve. The organizations Operation Gratitude and Soldier’s Angels have a presence in Southern California, and they lead Halloween candy donation drives in early November. It’s one small way to show gratitude for our troops and veterans. You can take it one step further and ask your school or a business you know to become a collection center for candy donations. While you’re at it, why not also host a letter-writing project during your candy drive to show appreciation for their service. Lastly, if you’re going to go through all the effort of collecting candy and writing thank you notes, why not see how it all comes together by attending a care package assembly day here in SoCal to understand more about where your donations are going.
Below, we’ve provided all the details for these ideas. Somewhere between Halloween and Thanksgiving is an amazing opportunity to be a voice and advocate for troops and veterans, many of which may have missed these holidays at home to serve our country.
