#MentorMeet: Carter

Meet Carter, a 10th grader in Huntington Beach and a graduate of our 2019 cohort of students who participated in MML’s Changemaker Leadership Year program. He led a discovery interview with Executive Director of Drains to Ocean Seth Matson, and is writing and publishing an environmental education children’s book!

.

✨What are you passionate about?

“I am passionate about art, human rights, and environmental preservation. There’s more, but those are my big three.”

.

.

✨What does “mentoring” mean to you?

“Mentoring to me is guiding someone to find their own answers, helping them earn things instead of giving it to them.”

.

.

✨How are you staying connected with others?

“I mostly stay connected through school, zoom, and other internet-based things. I don’t get a chance to leave my house often, but I still try to keep contact with friends.”

.

.

✨Is there someone in your life who has been a mentor to you in an unexpected way?

“Ashley and Lachelle (both mentors from MentorMe Learning). I expected them to help me with passions and the community, but it was unexpected that they helped me feel important. When our group went to meetings and visits I felt more important than I did before. Now I feel more worthy to be in the room where it happens and other such things.”

 .

.

✨What is one positive thing you’ve seen come out of the challenges we have all been facing during 2020?

“One of the more positive things I’ve seen come out of 2020 is conversation. With COVID-19, the protests, and other challenges we’ve been able to talk to each other more to figure things out.”

.

What’s one thing you learned during your mentor ship that you’ve applied to another area in your life?

“One thing that I learned during my mentor ship was that no one is “more special” than anybody else. All these people I admired and met had anxieties and flaws just like me. Now whenever I think about talking to other people it’s easier to remember that they get just as nervous as I do. It has made everyday interactions easier.”
